This Open Source lab is intended to be the foundation for further studies. If you have an idea for a project requiring the use of this infrastructure please submit your proposal to Seneca's Center for Development of Open Technology. Also, you'll probably need some startup documents for which we have the following templates:
Here is a list of projects currently underway.
-
Total Cost of Ownership: This study is designed to measure the costs incured to design, build, and maintain an Open Source lab in an Ontario secondary school. The home page can be found at cdot.senecac.on.ca/projects/oss2/tco/.
-
Science Workshop 500 Interface: This project involves writing an Application Programmer's Interface (API) to PASCO Scientific's 500 interface. PASCO has been gracious enough to provide us with their protocols for this device. Programming is expected to begin in January 2004. The project web site is at cdot.senecac.on.ca/projects/oss2/pasco/.
-
Eclipse for High Schools: Eclipse is an open source development environment. This project is designed to produce the resources (labs, notes, etc.) required by teachers who teach Java programming to high school students. The web site can be found at cdot.senecac.on.ca/projects/oss2/eclipse/.
-
Distance Wireless: This project is more of a "proof of concept", to test the feasibility of connecting Emery Collegiate to Seneca College using a long-distance wireless network. The web site can be found at cdot.senecac.on.ca/projects/oss2/wireless/.
-
Parkdale Collegiate Linux Lab: Murray Saul, a professor here at Seneca, has worked with Parkdale Collegiate over the past year and has established several good contacts there. Through his efforts Seneca has donated hardware (30 used PIIIs) in order that a Linux lab be implemented at the school. The web site for this sub-project can be found at cdot.senecac.on.ca/projects/oss2/parkdale/.
